Recovery HeroGlen Beck Recovery Hero

Glen Beck

Glen Beck is a successful entrepenuer, political commentator and tv show host. Beck is publisher of fusion magazine and has also written two bestselling books. His nationally-syndicated radio show airs on over 260 stations and his television show airs on CNN. Beck also stars in a one-man stage show which tours the US twice a year.

Early in Beck's career he became an alcoholic and daily drug abuser. In this Dec. 2007 interview Beck openly talks of his addictions stating he used drugs daily beginning when he was 16 years old and later drank a gallon of Jack Daniels a week. His first marriage ended in divorce due to his alcholism and addictions. He refers to himself as a scumbag monster during this time in his life.

Beck eventually found relief of these addictions thanks to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Beck for many years has openly talked about his alcoholism and addictions but has recently been making the rounds on TV discussing this in hopes of helping others. Here is a great video of Beck discussing what he use to be like and what happened for him to change. He also discusses his first time to an AA meeting in this video.

Beck described himself in an interview with Nancy Grace on CNN by stating "I like to say I'm a work in progress, a recovering scumbag". Since finding a new way of life, Beck's career has taken off but he keeps things real and humble remembering who he is and devoting time to service work.

It is always impressive when someone in the spotlight openly talks about their recovery. They have the opportunity to reach others in a way most of us can not. When someone of Beck's stature openly talks about alcoholism and addiction he portrays hope to thousands and thier families while also putting recovery in a positive light to the general public.

In this interview with Paul Zahn for the show Hooked: When You Cant Stop, Beck states "Alcoholics aren't who you think they are. I always thought that they were winos, so I couldn't be one. They are successful people. They are just like you. And it is so green and so warm on the other side. It just takes courage to walk through the storm. But, once you walk through that storm, your whole life opens up. It's just -- it's miraculous, what's on the other side". Very well put Glen!

Clean and Sober Not Dead is proud to recognize Glen Beck as their "Recovery Hero" for April 2008.
